Shift: A Local Knowledge Platform

The goal of the Local Knowledge Platform is to deliver an immersive interpretive guide that’s built around GPS-triggered content and media. The application provides visitors and armchair tourists an opportunity to explore destinations and learn more about places, stories, people, historical sites, natural history, businesses and local colour through carefully curated itineraries and stories. It is different from other travel/city guides in that it offers a more personalized experience than typical travel guides. The application aims at helping people walk in someone else’s shoes, form a deeper understanding of a place, and easily discover hidden gems.

Project Overview

A supported destination will include a list of potential handpicked itineraries suggested by locals, by theme and updated regularly. For each itinerary, there would be a short description and a stylized map of the area that can be navigated by the user and by clicking on icons, information cards that include text, videos, audio files, historical images, other still photos will roll over the screen along with suggestion based on the user preferences. The application will bridge the gap between attractions, venues, events, and places answering the core question visitors have of “what should I do today?”

This exciting project will support users with pre-trip planning and in-market connections.
