Sentry - Drone Platform for Situational Awareness

This project focuses on supporting the development of an advanced UAV prototype iteration which further refines the platform and moves it forward in a path to commercialization. Two versions of this prototype iteration, one with an infrared camera, will be used to demonstrate the platform capabilities, validate the product among the target audience and to solicit pre-sales for a production run.

Project Overview

Within the unmanned aerial vehicle market the Sentry offers a unique approach that differs from most major manufacturers, focusing on ruggedness, extreme portability, ease of use in emergency situations, and affordability for smaller and volunteer organizations. Existing UAV users in the Yukon (highway workers, SAR teams, wildland fire, police, mining and exploration companies, etc.) will have a local solution instead of importing UAVs.

The main focus of the UAV platform is for search and rescue (SAR). SAR teams in Canada are in an interesting position – most see the clear benefit of UAVs for their job but many are held back by various forms of red tape: Transport Canada/FAA laws on where you can fly (due to relax somewhat in 2017), lengthy permit application processes, difficult insurance requirements, provincial govt. restrictions on using UAVs for SAR, questions around ease of use and training requirements.  Many SAR teams also fear losing an expensive device.  The Sentry aims to overcome these challenges.
