Kathleen Thorpe, Selkirk First Nation Bursary

Kathleen (Van Bibber) Thorpe was a lovely woman who lived an amazing life on the land, raised with a big family at Mica Creek, the Pelly, Yukon, Tay and MacMillan Rivers, Ta’Tla Mun Lake and the Ddhaw Grho mountain area.
Her moccasins were high demand, and she also loved to paint. She had the best photo albums and journals, and her cozy house was full of paintings and old photos. At the time of her death on May 30, 2016, she was the oldest member of the Selkirk First Nation.
Kathleen spent most of her life volunteering for the community of Pelly, working in the school teaching sewing and providing support to numerous students and family members. Kathleen’s dedication to and support of Selkirk youth was, and continues to be, inspirational.
Dan Sanford and Jeff Glaicar, Glaicar Sanford Wealth Partners of RBC Dominion Securities, would like to make a $1000 award available to a Selkirk First Nation student, in Kathleen Thorpe’s name. The purpose of this award is to assist this student with expenses over the course of his/her studies at Yukon University to a maximum of two years.
Eligibility
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Be a member of the Selkirk First Nation
- Submit an audio or video file, or a written submission (max 200 words), answering the following questions:
- What program are you pursuing at Yukon University?
- How do you plan to use this award?
- How will your program help you be a leader in your community?
- Remain in good academic standing (minimum GPA of 2.0) throughout their program of study

- Audio file OR video file OR a typed essay (max 200 words)
This bursary may be renewed without subsequent application as long as the Fall 2020 recipient remains in good academic standing (minimum GPA of 2.0) throughout their program of study.
