A Yukon College student dedicated to giving back to the community is among four students being recognized with scholarship and bursary money this semester, this time totaling $2,000.

Janine Arey was awarded the Yukon Electrical Company Bursary of $500 on November 12, for her community involvement. Arey is a full-time student in the College and Career Preparation Program. She coached Team Yukon’s Inuit Games Athletes for the 2008 Canada Winter Games and the 2009 Arctic Winter Games. She is also a Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous can-can dancer and volunteers at the Copper Ridge Place. On top of her college course load and volunteer activities, Arey works on-call at the Whitehorse General Hospital. “Receiving this bursary is helpful because it means I don’t have to take on a second part-time job and instead I can focus on my studies and my volunteering,” she says.

Kimberley Blake received the Janet and Pierre Berton Scholarship of $400, for full-time First Nation students, who have completed the first year of any Yukon College post-secondary program. She also received the Mary Ellen Whyard Bursary of $500, which is awarded to students who are enrolled in the Early Childhood Development Program at the College and demonstrate financial need.

The George Walker 8th International Congress on Circumpolar Health Scholarship for $400 was awarded to Marie Boucher. The scholarship is open to full-time students in a health, social science or science program at the College.

Kyley Henderson received the $200 Aron Senkpiel Scholarship, after completing two-years of transfer credit courses at the College, before transferring to the University of Lethbridge, where she is taking a bachelor of science degree in preparation for a master’s degree in architecture.

“There are so many opportunities for students to receive funding to support their education at Yukon College and we try to get the bursary and scholarship money to them as soon as possible,” says Bente Sorensen, Admissions Support Officer with the College.

To be considered for the scholarships and bursaries, all of the students had to meet eligibility criteria. Students looking for more information on the bursaries and scholarships available at the College can contact Bente Sorensen.
