Community involvement

Studying hard while you are at Yukon University will help you achieve your academic goals.  An equally important part of studying abroad is learning about the culture and country that you are visiting.  Becoming a part of the community will help you improve your English and will increase your knowledge about different cultural perspectives.  You can become a part of the community by joining clubs or sports groups, becoming a volunteer, attending cultural and arts events and generally being active in our community.

Here is a list of some of the different activities that you can take part in:
Sports

You can find information about sport clubs and groups to join by going to the Sport Yukon website, or by looking in the Yukon News newspaper classified ads. Several businesses offer equipment rental and guide services for indoor or outdoor recreation.

Volunteer activities

Many people choose to give time to their community so that they can meet other people, increase their skills, and contribute something valuable to the community. Students will meet new people and gain new work-related experiences.

Communications

Satellite radio and television gives access to hundreds of radio and television networks. There is also local programming available.  Whitehorse has two newspapers, the Whitehorse Star, running five times per week and the Yukon News, which currently prints three times a week. There is also an entertainment newspaper called What’s Up Yukon. All three of these papers can be found at local stores. Whitehorse also has periodicals for local special interests, such as L'Aurore boréale for the francophone community.

Tourism, festivals and events

While you are a student in Whitehorse, you may want to take advantage of the semester breaks and get away to see the surrounding area and other parts of the Yukon.  There are many music, sport, cultural and wildlife events and festivals that take place in Whitehorse and throughout the Yukon which you won’t want to miss. Check out the Calendar of Events page on the Yukon tourism webpage
