Turn your business idea into reality this summer!

Explore the world of entrepreneurship and develop your business idea with our team.

This program provides a model environment to foster your business idea, with up to $2500 of funding support for each participant. Successful applicants will work with local entrepreneurs and have access to I&E’s network of over 100 business mentors. We aim to give you the knowledge and tools you need to think decisively and act confidently as a budding entrepreneur; and watch your idea flourish. 

We believe that business can be a force for good. This program will expose you to sustainability practices, with an introduction to social enterprise. Thanks to the Government of Canada’s Sustainable Development Goals Funding program. 

Funding support for each participant is generously provided by Government of Canada’s Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), Government of Yukon, Kobayashi Zedda Architects, Total North and Apprendo.

The Summer Biz School is an opportunity to develop your business idea by: 

  • working with local entrepreneurs  

  • connecting with potential partners and mentors from across the country 

  • developing entrepreneurial skills, such as, problem solving, critical thinking, networking and relationship building 

  • building your resume  

  • developing self-determination  

  • gaining real world experience 

  • using this 2.5-month experience to decide whether your business idea is worth pursuing

What is in it for Summer Biz School participants

The Program starts with a Launch Week for all students to: 

  • meet the Innovation & Entrepreneurship team and entrepreneur sponsors 

  • connect with additional entrepreneurial support at NorthLight 

  • validate their idea and build the foundations of their business through a bootcamp 

At the end of this immersive bootcamp, you will pitch the business idea you want to pursue for the rest of the summer. This includes: 

  • training on how to develop a successful pitch 

  • 1:1 interviews/pitches to explore funding opportunities 

  • customized sessions with the tools and resources to grow your idea 

Who can apply

Apply now if you are:  

  • a youth aged 18-30  

  • a University student (studying part-time or full-time), planning on returning in Fall 2021 

  • a University student graduating this spring 

  • available to commit at least 10/15hrs week to the program from May 3, 2021 to July 23, 2021.

No business background required. 

Selection process

Through video, phone, written submission, or in person: 

  • share the idea, interest or problem that you are curious to explore  

  • tell us about your areas of passion for your career and community 

  • explain why you want to join the Summer Biz School 

The program deadline for applications is April 1, 2021.  Our Selection Committee will let you know its decision by April 16, 2021.  

Follow-up interviews may also be required.
