Giving circles

Getting together to give. It’s an idea on the rise, and for good reason: it works!

Gather a group of friends, family, neighbours or colleagues who share your passion for education. Collectively, decide on your goal and how you’d like to get there (a fundraising event like a Fun Run; a raffle; financial donations from each group member, etc.). Working together makes even enormous goals attainable, and pooled resources can have a far greater impact than individual donations.

Yukon University students have benefitted from the efforts of several successful giving circles. Here are two amazing examples:

Kay Linley used a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds during her epic 1,000km kayak trip from Atlin, BC to Dawson City, YT. The Together Today Scholarship created with her campaign proceeds brought eight Yukon First Nations Youth, representing five different First Nations, to a week-long Youth Leadership Workshop. They learned about different aspects of leadership, history and culture through both in class and hands on experiences.

A group of friends came together to support Audrey McLaughlin’s 80th birthday. In her honour, they established an endowment fund that will support the Audrey McLaughlin Award in Social Work. The award embodies so many principles that are dear to Audrey’s heart: empowering and supporting Yukon females who are active volunteers in their community while pursuing an education leading to a career in social work.

There are many ways to establish a giving circle. Platforms are available via GoFundMe or at CanadaHelps.org. We’d be happy to work with you to explore your ideas!
